Taking the first step

Taking the first step - don’t let the fear of being ‘wrong’ hold you back

Do you ever wonder what ‘right’ looks like?

‘Is this the right time to take that risk?’

‘Am I doing this [task, parenting, work-life balance, healthy eating, anything] right?’

‘Did I handle that situation in the right way?’

I do. I often wonder about the ‘right’ way to do things, and reflect on whether I fully ticked this ‘right’ box.

But I honestly think, except for some things (there is, for example, a correct way and an incorrect way to install a boiler), there is no cookie cutter ‘right’ that can be applied every time to our lives and circumstances.

There is taking the first step. And then there is learning.

Trying, reflecting, adapting and trying again.

This is a beautiful, messy part of our human condition. We are not born with the capability to automatically do everything we want with confidence.

We lie, we roll, we crawl, we toddle, we fall over, we try again, we walk, we run.

I take great comfort in the belief that we are all ‘good enough’. I may not get everything right, but I am good enough. I try, I reflect, I adapt, I learn and I try again.

This is my first blog. My first leap into an unknown. My first movement away from the constraints of ‘right’ (‘oh I will wait to publish this blog until it is right’) and into a world of exploration.

What are you wanting to explore today?

What fears of ‘right-ness’ are holding you back?

Take heart in the fact that you are good enough, and let’s go on this journey of learning together.
